Cousin George Sherrill
Closer for the Baltimore Orioles
from "Old Nick", August, 2008 - submitted by Editor Bob Chope

Even if you are not a fan of America's favorite pastime, Cousin George Sherrill's blossoming career in the Major Leagues should serve as a source of pride in his accomplishment. Many young ball players can only dream of making it to the Majors.

After completing several years in the minor leagues, Cousin George played the last four seasons with the Seattle Mariners. He worked in a set-up role during the 2007 season. In March 2008 the Baltimore Orioles manager, Dave Trembley, announced that Cousin George would be the "closer" for the team. As a short reliever, George feels that being closer is the most desirable role. As he stated in March, "I think any short reliever wants to be the closer, that go-to-guy."

Cousin George is a left-hander. He had to prove his ability to strike out right-handed batters as well a left-handed. To date, he has proven to be consistent and effective as a closer.

Checking George's progress on the Baltimore Orioles web page it was discovered that he has created quite a sensation in Baltimore by his not creasing the visor of his cap. Apparently this is a long tradition of George's, which he attributes to his having difficulty creasing the visor in the center. Rather than have his cap look lopsided, he has decided to leave his visor straight. The fans and the local media have not let this minor infraction of baseball tradition alone. It seems that the folks in Baltimore need more interesting lives. According to George, how he shaped the visor of his cap was never an issue in Seattle, WA.

The news of George's trade to the Baltimore Orioles was submitted by his father, S. L. (Lee) Sherill, Jr. Lee reports that George is delighted that he was traded to an East Coast team like the Orioles with a long history.

History, more precisely family history, is the purpose of this publication. To this end we eagerly await more information on Lee's immediate family and ancestors connecting to the Davies line.
