Compiled by Dr. James David Boyle

Samuel Boyle1 Davies, son of Henry Landon Davies, Gentleman and Anne Whiting Clayton, was born in Bedford Co, Virginia 22 December 1774. Samuel applied for a marriage license to wed Elizabeth McCulloch in Amherst Co, Virginia, 29 May 1802. The Bondsman was Roderick McCulloch.

He married Elizabeth McCulloch in Amherst Co, Virginia, 6 June 1802.

Elizabeth was born 11 March 1773. She was the daughter of Roderick McCulloch and Elizabeth Horsley. She was probably the free white female, age 26 and under 45, in Samuel Boyle Davies' household in the 1810 Census in Bedford Co, Virginia. She was probably the free white female, age 45 or over, in Samuel Boyle Davies' household, in the 1820 Census in Northern Division, Bedford Co, Virginia. She died 20 March 1833 in Lynchburg, Campbell Co, Virginia, at 60 years of age.

Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1810 Census in Bedford Co, Virginia. In 1810 his household consisted of 3 white males (2 ages 0-9 and 1 age 26-44), 3 white females (2 ages 0-9 and 1 age 26-44), as well as 23 slaves. Samuel was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in No. Div, Bedford Co, Virginia. In the household in 1820 are 4 white males (2 ages 10-15, 1 age 16-25 and 1 age 45 or older), 3 white females (1 age 10-15, 1 age 16-25 and 1 age 45 or older) and 27 slaves.

He died 1 February 1829 at his residence, probably in Bedford Co, Virginia, at 54 years of age, according to two newspapers. His body was interred in Amherst Co, Virginia, at "Vault Hill". "Vault Hill" was granted, along with 30,000 other acres, to Nicholas Davies in 1751 and inherited by Nicholas Clayton Davies, then in turn by Samuel Boyle Davies. The tract was sold to Edward Tinsley (son of David Tinsley), the cemetery being excluded specifically from the sale. The earliest stones there are of Samuel Davies' children, according to a manuscript by Bob Tinsley.

Samuel Boyle Davies and Elizabeth McCulloch had the following children: Anne Clayton Elizabeth Davies, Roderick McCulloch Davies, Dr. William Brown Davies, and Elizabeth McCulloch Davies.
