Birth Note: Originally he was from Dinwiddie Co, Virginia, and he was the son of
Capt. Joseph Friend. He later lived in Charleston.
Death Note: Both he and his wife had died by this date, leaving three adolescent
daughters to live with their grandfather, Joseph Friend, a wealthy
salt manafacturer who was from Chesterfield Co but by then lived in
Kanawha Co, West Virginia.

Shrewsbury, he became County Clerk for Kanawha Co, West Virginia in
1872. During the Civil War, he went south with his family, and served
in the Confederate Forces in what is now Virginia.
