Note for:   Anne Whiting Clayton,   1746 - AFT 23 AUG 1784         Index

Individual Note:
In a gift deed (Morton, "[IT:Clayton Deeds:IT]"), she is acknowledged
10 Mar 1777 as the daughter of John and Elizabeth and was to receive a
negro slave named Phillis. For generations she was believed to be
the daughter of Henry Whiting, but her identity as the daughter of
John W. Clayton and not of Whiting was suggested and then conclusively
proved by Philip Wayne Rhodes in 1986 [IT:(Clayton-Davies
Revisited:IT]).

Burial:

Birth Note:    His birthplace has not yet been located. His family had lived near
the border of Herefordshire and Shropshire in England for many
generations and very likely were of Welsh ancestry. His father had
been born in Bury Hinton, Richards Castle Parish in Herefordshire, but
his father married an unknown woman after leaving the area and the
birthplace of the three sons, Nicholas, Francis and Samuel is still a
mystery. Philip Ballard of Reading, Berkshire, with the support and
encouragement of other Davies family cousins, is responsible for all
that is currently known of Nicholas' origins. To him we owe a
tremendous debt of gratitude.

Death Note:    The death notice which appeared in the newspaper was signed by Henry
L. Davies on 30 September 1794.
